WRITING

At Shelton Infant School our intent is for all pupils to view themselves as successful writers from an early age. We deliver a creative curriculum that enables children to write for purpose and to use their creativity. Writing is taught through a range of exciting stimuli including books, film clips, artefacts, visitors and real-life experiences.  We aim to provide the children with opportunities so that they develop a rich vocabulary which will help them bring their writing to life.

Children practise their writing skills in a variety of ways and through the use of a range of writing materials.  Teachers ensure that all pupils experience and enjoy writing a wide range of different genres, including retelling known texts.

In Key Stage 1 and Reception all children regularly produce an independent piece of writing that is assessed by teachers.

We encourage children to have high expectations to apply the skills they have been taught in writing across all areas of the curriculum.  Learning to Learn adventures also provide the children with opportunities to write for a variety of purposes.

 Handwriting

In Nursery and Reception, children are taught how to hold a pencil and other writing equipment correctly and are given lined boards to practise on. All children from Reception to Year 2 are taught specific handwriting skills each week. In Key Stage 1, children are taught the handwriting letter families and children practise these using specific lined boards and paper. When children are consistently forming their letters correctly, they are taught how to join their letters using a cursive script.

Spellings

In Year 1 and 2, children are given weekly spellings to practise at home.  Children practise these spellings in a range of ways throughout the week ready for an informal test at the end of the week.
