Physical Education
Intent
At Shelton Infant School it is our intent to promote and develop healthy lifestyles using a combination of teacher-led PE lessons, specialist practitioners and coaches, daily physical activity and access to high quality outdoor resources (including the adventure playground, the Nursery garden, the reception outdoor area, the Forest Schools area and a varied selection of playground equipment). We progressively cover the aims of the Physical Education National Curriculum to ensure that all pupils: develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities; are physically active for sustained periods of time; engage in competitive sports and activities; lead healthy, active lives; and, enjoy participating in sports, learning to work together as teams, to celebrate success and to develop resilience in times of challenge.
Children will build their physical, mental and emotional resilience and confidence across a range of PE disciplines and be provided with fun and engaging opportunities to develop their gross motor and fundamental movement skills, as well as their agility, balance and coordination. The children will learn to evaluate their own and others performances, providing thoughtful and constructive feedback to encourage progress.
Implementation
Our whole school progression document and half termly knowledge and skills organisers for PE have been created by teachers working together using the Complete PE scheme as a framework.
Our curriculum documents have been reviewed and validated by Complete PE who have also provided advice and guidance.
These documents are used to ensure that the knowledge and skills that teachers want the children to know, remember and use are clearly identified and carefully sequenced from Nursery to Year 2. This also ensures continuity and progression of teaching and learning.
All children have the opportunity to participate in PE at their own level of development, with teachers ensuring that lessons cater for individual needs. As well as securing and building on a range of skills, children develop knowledge of the basic rules of a range of games and sports. Children learn in a safe environment and develop a foundation for lifelong physical activity.
EYFS
Physical activity is encouraged using both the indoor and outdoor provision. Children learn specific skills including balancing, climbing, jumping, throwing and catching, kicking and moving in a range of ways. A weekly discrete PE lesson focuses on developing particular skills using a varied range of equipment including parachutes, benches, balls, gymnastics apparatus and so on. Emphasis is put on creating fun and enjoyable sessions for the children which aim to inspire a love of sport and physical activity. In the EYFS, children are introduced to the word ‘healthy’ and what this means. Children are given opportunities during their PE lessons and appropriate activities within provision to observe and discuss the physical effects that being active has on their bodies, talking about the link to being healthy.
Key Stage One
In KS1, children are taught two, one hour long PE sessions a week engaging in a variety of invasion sports-based games, dance and gymnastics. Children build on the fundamental skills taught in EYFS and aim to master basic skill movements such as running, throwing, jumping and catching as well as developing agility, balance, and coordination. Children are introduced to team games as well as individual sports. Simple tactics are introduced to the children as well as competitive sports, whether that be competing against other children, teams or themselves.
Impact
Children make good progress over time relative to their starting points. Throughout their time at our school pupils know and remember more in PE. Children are aware of the link between physical activity and good mental health and understand its significance as part of a healthy lifestyle. By the time children leave Shelton Infant School they know that being active is good for both physical and mental health, they have experienced a range of sports, are developing their skills as team players and understand how and why they should demonstrate good sportsmanship.
Teachers regularly assess children’s knowledge and skills using ongoing formative assessment and complete summative assessments at three points during the year.
The subject leader evaluates the impact of the curriculum through lesson observations, professional dialogue with colleagues, and pupil voice which includes scrutiny of children’s work, discussions with pupils and their enjoyment of PE.
Our children say:-
- I like doing gymnastics because you learn about sequences and pathways.
- PE is important because you learn how to be healthy and strong.
- I like it when we play with the parachute and you have to hide under it.
- We learn how to be Champion Dancers – you need to do different levels and different actions – big and small.
- I have learnt how to dribble – that means keeping the ball between your feet and under control.
- PE is ace because you learn lots of different games and how to dodge and defend.
